Footpath is very excited to announce Mia as our March 2018 Footpath Friend of the Month. Mia is a 3rd grader with a huge smile and an even bigger heart.
When Mia’s mom contacted me and told me Mia wanted to devote her 3rd grade school service project to Footpath I was very happy, but also a bit worried. Mia wanted to raise enough money to send a kid to camp. Her plan was to make and sell rainbow loom bracelets at school. That is A LOT of rainbow loom bracelets. I wasn’t sure it was the best goal for her and suggested she create a Camp Kit or set a smaller goal instead. But, Mia was persistent and determined to send a kid to camp.
The first day of the school fair, Mia was very upset. She only sold a handful of bracelets and was nowhere near her goal. “I was so sad. I knew I wasn’t close to being able to send a kid to camp.” But Mia’s determined spirit paid off and the next day was different. By the end of the project, Mia sold $96 worth of rainbow loom bracelets that she made! She donated some of her own birthday money and her parents matched it, allowing Mia to reach her goal. Mia beamed as she told me she’d be able to send a kid to camp. “After the sale, I was so excited! I KNEW another kid would be able to go to camp now!” Mia gushed.
When she handed me the money she was bouncing with excitement. Her smile reached from ear to ear and her eyes twinkled with happiness. My eyes, on the other hand, began to tear up as I thanked her. Mia is a true Footpath Friend. Mia is a child who understands why it’s important to help other children who aren’t as fortunate as herself. Mia knew how camp made her feel: good, brave, and happy. She was determined to give this opportunity and these feelings to another child.
Thank you, Mia. Thank you for being a Friend to Footpath kids and making it possible for a child to go to camp this summer. You have inspired all of us, and will continue to inspire many more!
