We are truly saddened by the tragic death of George Floyd, which led to protests at major cities around the country, including Cleveland. Those protests were launched with peaceful intentions, and they sent a message to all of us: We must join together to stop systemic racism.
Many of the kids and families we serve at Footpath Foundation routinely encounter these injustices and have inadequate access to the natural world. Encouraging them to love nature doesn’t make a difference if they feel unsafe or encounter racism when they venture outside.
We believe in equality for all, and through improving nature equity we are taking an important step towards ending systemic racism.
All of us – especially those who do not face these injustices on a daily basis – need to be better listeners and advocates for marginalized populations.
It can be hard to know where to start to make a real difference, but helping to raise a generation of children who understand why racism is wrong and how it infiltrates our communities is a crucial step. Check out these books for a child you love:
