Footpath Foundation is dedicated to helping kids discover their fullest potential through meaningful outdoor experiences.
To create generations of hopeful children who are confident and resilient.
We are committed to connecting kids with nature while equipping them with the skills necessary to overcome their unique hurdles in life.
Why Is Footpath Needed in Cleveland?
The city of Cleveland has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the country. According to The Greater Cleveland Foodbank, Cleveland’s 2014 rate of poverty for children was a shocking 58.5%, compared to the national average of 21.1%. Growing up in poverty greatly affects these kids and strips them of the opportunities they deserve to reach their fullest potential. Our outlook on life is shaped by many factors including the experiences we have throughout childhood. Footpath’s goal is to help kids in Cleveland have these valuable outdoor experiences which can help them find their footing in life.
How can outdoor experiences impact these kids in a meaningful way?
The reality is a lot of these children coming from poverty stricken communities haven’t had the exposure to nature and other outdoor activities that can help shape a child’s world-view and increase a sense of peace and self-esteem. Footpath aims to be an advocate for these kids and give them access to nature which will give them hope and enhance their overall well being. By empowering these kids and giving them opportunities to thrive, they can truly get excited about their futures and break out of poverty as adults.
The summer camp experience has been a major focus of ours because it offers so much all in one package. Not only do the kids have access to valuable recreational activities such as: sports, swimming, boating, hiking, crafts and games but they also develop valuable life skills. Kids learn team-building, exhibit increases in self-esteem, feel a sense of community, have access to a variety of mentors, learn about their strengths, form layered friendships and can gain a fresh perspective on life that gives them hope for a brighter future. Kids build courage and resiliency while at camp and this lays the foundation for a path towards success.
In addition to gained skills, these kids can truly just be kids at camp. Many children coming from under-served communities do not feel completely carefree on a consistent basis. They are often taking care of other family members, worrying about their family’s finances or feeling stressed about their futures. At camp they can temporarily let go of the pressures of life and feel safe and at peace. This is something every child should feel on a regular basis. Through enrichment programming we aim to enhance their lives and truly impact the way they see the world. They can hold onto their memories to help see them through tougher times.
Help Us Break the Cycle of Poverty
As we grow over the next few years, not only will we expand the summer camp program, butwe will also create more positive outdoor experiences. This summer we helped coordinate a group of inner city teens attend a local farm in addition to sending 42 kids to summer camp. We aim to offer more outdoor opportunities and enrich even more kids’ lives. This is where you come in. Join our journey. You can help us grow with your donations and as a volunteer.
