Saint Bernadette’s Community Action Group and Dover Intermediate School welcomed Footpath Foundation to their schools to learn about our mission. We were so excited to meet these compassionate kids and help with their goals.
Footpath’s President, Mary Macias, talked about how all kids need nature, but too many do not have easy access to a close and safe outdoor space.
Mary asked kids to raise their hands if they’ve ever been hiking, fishing, canoeing or if they’ve ever swam in a lake or ocean. Every hand was raised. Kids pointed out that these experiences were important because playing in nature:
- “Helps us feel relaxed”
- “Makes us feel happy”
- “Is so much fun!”
Mary then asked the team to imagine what it would feel like if they found out they couldn’t do any of these things this summer. “Imagine if you never got the chance to try these things at all. Imagine if you never got the chance to explore the woods and have safe outdoor adventures among a lot of trees and grass. These are the kids Footpath is helping.”
After further discussion about how nature and playing outside helps build self-esteem, bravery and creativity, the kids worked together to decorate one of nature’s most convenient canvases: ROCKS! The students beautifully decorated Footpath’s Courage Rocks with pictures of nature and words of inspiration.
Footpath will use these Courage Rocks to decorate summer camp and also as gifts for campers. A little bit of nature to take home with them as a reminder of the courage inside of them.
These rocks will help to bring hope to disadvantaged kids who have limited access to nature but so desperately want to have outdoor adventures which will give them happy memories that will last a lifetime. THANK YOU Community Action and DISC for hosting Footpath and for helping to spread JOY to kids in need! #CourageRocks #FootpathKidsRock #KidsHelpingKids
